Celebrations

We hope celebrations will provide opportunities for neighbours to connect which will contribute to building a more connected, healthy and liveable place for current and future generations of our community.

Neighbour Day 2018 in Dulong

Neighbour Day is Australia’s annual celebration of community, encouraging people to connect with those who live in their neighbourhood.

Neighbour Day 2018 in Dulong – Morning Tea

Everyone is welcome to come along and say g’day!
It’s a good opportunity to meet your neighbours on Sunday 25 March 2018 at 10.00 am, Lot 900 198-218 Dulong Road, Dulong,

Please bring a plate of food to share, a reusable mug and a chair.
The big marquee, borrowed from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, will provide shade until a permanent shelter is constructed.  Also, there’s plenty of space to kick a ball and have fun!

The Importance of a Supportive Neighbourhood

In 2018, Neighbour Day’s annual theme is: ‘The Importance of a Supportive Neighbourhood for Children and Young People.’

This theme encourages all Australians to support safe and welcoming communities for the families with children and young people in their neighbourhoods.

The research tells us that children who know the neighbours, are aware of somewhere safe to go when Mum or Dad are not at home and know their local environment will feel happier and safer in their community.

Studies also tell us that social exclusion and loneliness are detrimental to mental and physical health, while social participation is positively associated with improved wellbeing for individuals, families and communities.  Social connection is especially important for vulnerable families or children facing other challenges at school or home.

That’s why this year, Neighbour Day is inviting all Australians to reach out to families with children and teenagers in their communities to help them to connect and belong.

Additional note

In the interests of peaceful neighbourly relations, we did not follow through on Cr Rogerson’s suggestion to complete an application to hold this event on the corner of Dulong and Thrushs Road behind the bollards. We are told securing land for public use is very close. A process which we began two years ago.

September: Unveiling of Our First Heritage Interpretive Plaque at the Official Re-Opening of the Dulong Lookout

We intend to ask Councillor Rogerson that this special day be a collaborative project with the community, and hope to lock in a date soon.  Then planning can begin, to enable people with a connection to Dulong and live in communities far away, to make arrangements to join us.

Spring ‘Plant ‘n’ Produce’ Swap
We are working with Council to secure an open air, public space within Dulong for the Spring Swap in October, the 2nd Anniversary of this community activity to encourage connecting with neighbours and together, practising more sustainable ways of living.
